Calcium hydroxide, meanwhile, is a white powder, made from slaking lime (calcium oxide) with water. It is more frequent in construction materials, such as concrete and mortar.

For example, calcium carbonate, a popular paper-making ingredient, helps smooth and brighten paper. It’s found in plastics to help make them strong and longer-lasting. Cement is a building material which hardens and sets with the addition of water and calcium hydroxide. It is also used as a preservative to kill bacteria and make food taste better.
