Have you ever heard of BHA? It is a food additive. An additive is something that is added to food in order for it to keep fresh. BHA stands for butylated hydroxyanisole. It helps keep the food from rotting super fast. Some of the food you eat might actually be of that harmful variety, but you can probably see the words “butylated hydroxyanisole” on the ingredient label. There is some research which suggests that consumption of enough BHA may be a health stressor. For example, certain studies indicate that BHA has the potential to cause cancer. There are also reports of feeling sick and having allergies after eating products that contain BHA. We need more studies to learn exactly how BHA impacts our health, but when we are considering what to to eat, it is useful to know this riskof the risks.

One way is to check the ingredient label when you receive food. Look for foods that do not use BHA emulsifier in food, or any other fake savory enhancers.
